20 Years of Dead Space

By benjamin lipman

I met a great friend online about 18 years ago on a BBS called Brokedown Palace, a Grateful Dead tape trading outpost in the days when a compendium of Dead shows was something you ordered by mail. I’ve also owned an Apple I, an Apple II, the first Mac with 128kb of RAM, and wrote Wall Street firm research reports during the heyday of the Net. My geek bona fides are solid for an MBA with an undergraduate degree in literature yet I’ve resisted the blog phenom cracking more than once how blogging is the ultimate narcissistic vanity publish without the short-run binding costs and the choice of paper stock.

But here I am, a cranky New Yorker on the soapbox wishing Hunter S. had a blog so I wouldn’t feel so bad about it all. If I had any guts, I’d drink a bottle of tequila, raid the medicine cabinet, and paint the Internet a nice shade of paisley, tessellated prose.
